Preventing and treating, Gum Disease
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that support and surround your teeth. It’s caused by the buildup of plaque – a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth – which can irritate the gums and lead to inflammation and infection. If left untreated, gum disease can progress from mild gingivitis to more severe forms, known as periodontitis, which can result in irreversible damage to the gums and bone supporting your teeth

Tips on Preventing Gum Disease
- The good news is that gum disease is largely preventable with proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Here are some tips to help keep your gums healthy:
- Brush Twice Daily: Brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time, using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Be sure to brush along the gumline to remove plaque and bacteria.
- Floss Daily: Flossing removes plaque and debris from between your teeth and along the gumline, where your toothbrush may not reach. Make it a habit to floss at least once a day.
- Rinse with Antimicrobial Mouthwash: Using an antimicrobial mouthwash can help reduce plaque and bacteria in your mouth, promoting gum health and freshening your breath.
- Eat a Balanced Diet: Limit sugary snacks and beverages, as they can contribute to plaque buildup and increase your risk of gum disease. Instead, opt for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
- Avoid Tobacco Products: Smoking and chewing tobacco can significantly increase your risk of gum disease and other oral health problems. If you use tobacco, consider quitting to improve your oral health and overall well-being.
